Second Runway at Gatwick
Discussion
No sure if this is a News item or Boats, Planes and Trains. However Gatwick have apparently been considering a 2nd runway http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-199772...
Not a great surprsie and as a resident of East Sussex and under the Gatwick flight path the Gatwick Area Conservation Group can get stuffed if they think they represent me. I would say it is common sense to build a 2nd runway at Gatwick, in fact if Heathrow say Gatwick is good as a point to point airport, but what we need is hub airports why not make Gatwick a Hub airport? There's more land around to enable the building of a 3rd runway, the M23 runs right past the entrance, its on a main raillink, and with Thameslink coming on stream will have improved railinks into St Pancras and the high speed lines.
Perhaps I should suggest it to Boris!

It's problem is being too far from anywhere. Realistically a hub should be NW of London to capture Birmingham and Manchester.
Luton is probably the best candidate of the existing airports but I reckon Upper Heyford is probably more suitable as it's next to the M40, a couple of existing lines and the HSR route plus is already capable of taking large aircraft. When built they could sell off Heathrow and Birmingham airports for redevelopment. Just imagine the effect of freeing up that much of West London? It's also in the next constituency to Cameron so what are it's chances?
All irrelevant as the government will kick it into the long grass of the next parliament instead of making a decision so the relevant investment may start. Now's such a good time too as the contractors will be at their keenest point in years.

Before they do anything at Gatwick they need to seriously improve both terminals! The south terminal is an utter joke, completely rammed with punters, very little choice in food or shopping and little space away from the crowds. There isn't any free wifi there either! The baggage handlers are ultra slow. It is almost embarrassing to land there and consider it one of our main airports when you see what they are doing in the middle east or SE asia!
I live about 6 miles from Gatwick and our local paper had a feature on the proposed new runway. The local "anti progress" busybodies were interviewed and photographed outside their houses with their hands over their ears cleverly portraying the huge amount of noise already disturbing their lives. Strangely the aforementioned resident lives a few hundred feet from me.
I couldn't tell you the last time I even heard a plane let alone was disturbed by one.
I certainly agree Gatwicks terminals need improvement first.

Doesn't Gatwick already have 2 runways? Admitedly one is hardly/never used...
There's one runway and a taxiway that can be used as a runway when the runway is getting work done on it, which is most nights as the work is now so far behind.
The standby runway is just a strip of concrete it has no approach aids just a few lights. If it's foggy of poor visibility you can't use it.
I can't think of an airport more in need of a second runway than Gatwick.

There was a documentary on Ch5 (I think) a while ago. Some local complainer had his own file drawer at the Gatwick PR / Noise complaint office. He sent them a letter a day. Obviously the airport was put up overnight after he bought his house....I couldn't tell you the last time I even heard a plane let alone was disturbed by one.

Absolutely. There's no chance of getting one there though. But with sympathetic infrastructure (an HSR link direct to Gatwick, for example) it needn't be a complete disaster. Ian Lancs said:

O/T for Gatwick, but this really isn't surprising- I live near EuroAirport, and I read recently that 97% of annual complaints (around 11000 I believe) made to the airport were from 7 people... suspect these complaints also have their own files, named "bin". SOme people have nothing better to do!

I saw that, iirc, he'd retired there about 10 years ago for the quiet life and then realised he'd moved in under the flight path...
Reminds me of the people who moved in near my parents in a small village, first Sunday they turned up at the Vicarage to complain about the Church Bell ringing at 10am Sunday morning (they'd moved in next door to the vicarage) "Will you be ringing the Bell every Sunday?"
"Yes, its a church..."
"We never heard it when we came to view the house- we think you should stop doing it as it woke us up!"
"Really, when did you view the house?"
"On a Saturday..."

It happened in Hingham, Norfolk too."Will you be ringing the Bell every Sunday?"

Then there are the people who moved next to Brands Hatch blissfully unaware that it might be a little bit noisy. Stupid people.
Living 3 miles from Lakenheath I get F15s passing over fairly low while climbing. Such a rich, powerful sound. I'd love a go, anything that noisy must be fun.

The land's kept vacant to the south, the airport desperately needs another runway just get on with it.
Indeed they own the land as well so all good to go new terminals on the new runway. Its the busiest single runway airport in the world at the mo so pretty well run.
I think there is a covenent in place till 2019 or something before they can start

Perhaps they should be a 3rd runway at the same time, to the north of the existing one!
Ahh airport noise complaints. How about:
I didn't buy a million pound house (Richmond) to be overflown by your aircraft. Send them over the council estates.
Since your trial started the residents of Greenwich have been plagued by aircraft noise. I took a survey on Saturday afternoon and we want to know what you're going to do about it.
Sir, the trial doesn't start for 2 months.
Your plane disturbed my naked midnight ritual.
The sweep over the radar is locking my communal door and trapping me in my flat.
Our street gets violent assaults in it on Saturdays. Caused by your planes flying over.
Last week we received several hundred specific complaints. About 2011.
The airspace is saturated. We're all going to die.
I hope you all die a horrible death.
Most major airports will tell you that approx 50% of all their complaints are made by less than 20 people.

I like someone to explain to me, in simple terms why the constant call for more traffic, runways and terminals in London.
I can't understand why we, as a country seem to want to drag more people from all 4 corners of the island to the most densly populated part to fly.
Wouldn't it be simpler and cheaper to build a new airport, somewhere a few miles off a major motorway in the middle of nowhere with is designated junction of it's own.
Heathrow's not too bad, but Gatwick is plain murder to get to and generally full of very tired people who've driven for 3-6 hours to get there.

Demand, a large percentage of business/tourism travelers want to be in the South East/London. They want to land and be at their destination within an hour (excluding the 2 hours wait for immagration and to pick up your bags!)I can't understand why we, as a country seem to want to drag more people from all 4 corners of the island to the most densly populated part to fly.
