Railroad tracks.The U.S. Standard railroad gauge (distance between rails)is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England ,and English expatriates designed the U.S. Railroads.Why did the English build them like that?Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who builtthe pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.Why did 'they' use that gauge then? When I was in school (and Supermac was still PM at the time, by the way
) we had a teacher who said that the gauge from outer rail edge to outer rail edge was originally 5 feet, then allowing an inch & three quarters for the rails, you got to an inner gauge of 4 feet 8 and a half inches.

...especially when you think the first people to use rails were the mines, who used what we would call "narrow gauge" rails with wagons either pushed by child employees or animals. Using a machine to move the coal didnt happen for sometime afterwards. So, in the phrase of the OP:
