ship building question
Discussion
Was going through some archives in Glasgow Uni today and looking at the manager progressive costs of a ship.
Something i noticed on it was for the first year or so each month they noted down the difference in weight
i.e one month total to date in one month 4306.3 tons the next month 5481.6 tons so the total weight of materials increased by 1175 tons,
But then after a year the weight of the materals continued to increase but they stopped marking down the difference but then started calculatoring total labour costs or other materials rather than just the iron for the hull.
Would there be any reason for this?

I'm guessing that as time progresses the hull is completed and then fitting out starts so the costs are now skilled labour and higher end materials for the cabins and engines etc.
i thought that as well but these were all in relation to the hull the fitting out was afterwards, the records i was looking at were from 1916- aug 1918 when the ship was launched. I didn't have enough time to look at the fitting out book which i think the prices would scare me even just looking at the hull one.Yachtworker said:
It wouldn't surprise me if the hull contract was priced per tonne, as that is how we still approach estimating a new build vessel. The superstructure and tank work could well be time and materials which would make sense.
suppose that does make sense.still found it all fascinating and also confusing. i'm still trying to figure would what the penciled numbers in the top section is for as they dont seem to differ on the 2 months.
