Can the PH massive help? Looking to buy a 1 hour flying time helicopter lesson for my lad. He is interested in flying the things for the Navy in years to come, so it makes sense for him to have a try now ( he's nearly 18). I dont want a glorified tourist flight, but a good initial lesson with the right guys.
Based in Derbyshire, but could travel a bit for the right package.
Any ideas or recommendations?

My Instructor was Rob Hields based out of Sherburn in Elmet, Leeds. Derbyshire was a favourite places to fly over from Sherburn. Very meticulous instructor and a down to earth Yorkshireman to boot. He won't mind me posting his number : Hields Aviation 07831 500855

Based in Peterborough. Mike is an absolute legend, a nicer bloke you could never wish to meet.

Try Pennine Helicopters - they fly Derbyshire all the time

Obviously worth finding a local firm if possible, then you can fly over familiar sights - house, school, friends, etc.

Robinsons are the cheapest and most common helicopters. R22 would allow Instructor +1. R44 would allow instructor +3. Both are pistons and pretty basic. There are better, Turbine, helicopters but you'll pay more (might be worth it).

A good provider will spend time with a thorough briefing, explain how/why a helicopter flies, show you other types of helicopter and allow you to sit in some. The flight should allow quite a lot of 'hands on' control and last at least 45 mins to be worthwhile, with a debrief afterwards.

Do chose a favourable weather day - good viz/light winds - although Helicopters like it cold.

You can ask the same question here http://www.pprune.org/rotorheads-23/ for professional comments. Second 'sticky' down might be useful.

Is he going to university? If so make sure he joins the university royal naval unit. It was deffo the best thing I did at university, spent total 6 months on ships and 2 weeks flying training and lots of adventurous training all paid for by the RN, plus some cracking mates and runs ashore from the UK to the Baltic it was very good fun indeed. Make sure he does study if he joins though!!!

P.s. I got to fly a commando seaking!!
