I've just been reading that.

I spent a lot of time at Seething a few years ago, there is a model flying club there and I used to be a member. Now privately owned and still used as a GA airfield.

If anybody gets the chance, go and visit the control tower museum. Full of stuff from it's time as a base during WW2.

Great story and a book i've added to my "must read" list.

Reminds me a little of Clarksons program a few years back about the Commando raid on St Nazaire.

At one point a group of British Commando's where hold up in a basement after a mental assault in the town after sneaking up the estuary and ramming the dry dock gates (only one capable of taking the Tirpitz).

The Germans called them to surrender which they did. and where treated well enough (some commented on being patted on the back for the shear balls of the attack).

One Commando interviewed commented the he couldn't understand why they just didn't lob a couple of grenades down the basement..."That's what I would have done"

It's not exactly a new story is it? It happened in 1943 after all.

It's been the subject of at least 2 threads on PH previously.

At LEAST two. When I clicked on the thread I was expecting this story it's been mentioned so many times. That said, of all things to repost, this is certainly one of the best, especially if you're not familiar with the tale.

It's not exactly a clear-cut story of 'doing the right thing' either...as someone on a previous thread said: how many of Stiglers countrymen (civilians) potentially died as a result of him letting this bomber crew escape to fight another day? It's a clear example of how different actions can be viewed depending on who the victor is.

Good Story, my Grandfather was based at the control tower in Seething during the war, infact I believe his uniform is on display in the museum.
