Where to buy a boat...

Perhaps a silly one? I'm not sure.

I'm interested in buying a second hand yacht, one to sail on the coast. Budget of 10k or so.

I like to buy my cars from dealers - are there second hand yacht dealers (ones that aren't 6 figure sums)?

Or does everyone buy private?

Yes there are second hand yacht dealers but think of them in the same terms as estate agents.

In the main you are still actually buying privately with the yacht dealer acting as agent not generally stock that has been taken in for onward sale at profit as a car dealer may operate.

Very nice - a 'proper' boat.

I am jealous of your mooring position - I'm on the 'Mudway' and it takes me an hour (with tide) to reach blue water. We have friends with a sail boat down in Portishead, but sadly I don't know the name of their boat. I think it's a Beneteau, around the 35' mark.

Sadly Rum Runner didn't have anything in stock that suited when I bought in December but when I called he was very honest and professional. Well worth a call

Actually, I'm not good at this sort of thing!

I tend to buy cars and boats from dealers, and then when it gets round to selling them, I just don't seem to get around to doing it. Can't be bothered with dealers, and I definitely don't want the public knocking on my door and asking silly questions.

The down-side of this, is you end up with ten cars, and soon to be five boats, and nowhere to keep the damned things.

I really must have a clear out at some point!

That said, I will be selling my little yacht to make way for a bigger one, but although it's a beautiful little boat in great condition, it's not going to be within budget. I'd love to keep her, but I can't justify two lots of mooring fees and I want to make sure she stays well used.

Have you seen the Apolloduck website ? Loads of all sorts of boats on there, some private, some for sale by brokers.

I guess not I'm afraid! Guess she'll go for something around £20-ish, or thereabouts.

I'm not desperate to sell, mooring is paid up for the year, new boat won't arrive until July or August, so happy to potter about on her for a few months yet if I have to.
