chartering a yacht
Discussion
yacht chartering is this a good business to get into , if I bought a boat for 150K say a sunseeker predator 60 year 2000 ( was approx. 800K in 2000) how much could you charter this out per week, no crew just bare boat is this a tangible business model ? and if so what would associated expenses be and how many weeks a year would this be rented out any experenced chartering companies or piston heads.
thanks all
thanks all
A lot of large boats recoup costs by chartering out.
You will need a skipper though as most people would want to enjoy the boat plus i wouldnt want any old person in charge of my boat the slightest knock can cost a fortune
Im not sure the market is as good as it once was for chartering though

My advice don't bother...thats coming from a x charter skipper, charter broker.
A boat has to be set up properly for this and you really need a boat layed out in a way to do 6 px charter. You need a boat with realistically 3 equal size cabins and crew quarters. Most charters will be couples, so equal cabins. Or its none starter, you can do 4px, demand is less, less income and marginal less running cost.
Skipper and Cook team 1000USD per ft per year wages for couple. You will need to see around 15-20 charters per year to make some return. There is plenty of well established competition and demand is down.
If you want a good charter boat with low cost, good return, buy a used x permanent crewed Moorings 4700 sailing cat. Set up for the job....they deliver the goods at around 10k-14k USD a week. Also they are wash and go when it comes to tight turnarounds, like 24hr between charter
Do it in the Caribbean, longer season and little time spent in marinas.

I have a client with two (sailing, crewed) charter yachts. They sell weeks on board through a timeshare company. It works well, but the boats are in use for most of the year, relocating further South in low season.
I've always wondered why this business model isn't more widely used...

Similar in a way to being a Moorings / Sunsail owner..
You used to get 6 weeks on any Moorings boat at any base destination , similar spec to your own boat wherever that might be based....you could sell your weeks back to Moorings if not used. Your own boat then comes out of the fleet after 6 years. There used to be various rates of return on charter weeks booked on the boat.
