simple really, but annoyingly hard to work out the answers from google. everywhere seems to be contradictory.

for microlights, is there a different test for flex wing and fixed wing?

You sit one test (in whichever you trained in) and technically it is a licence for either.

However you would need to do differences training before actually using the licence to fly the other one. May only take a few hours, depends on your aptitude.

Most sites that talk explicitly about the trainng only mention one, but then when talking about converting to a PPL talk about two. all very confusing.

Just one more question;

I have seen plenty of people say that there is no time limit around getting your flying hours in before getting your licence, however reading through the BMAA site it looks like you need to do the hours within 9 months prior to applying to licence.

any idea which?

The solo and nav time needs to be logged within 9 months of licence application, not the whole training.

Generally you'd do all your exercises, then rack up some solo time which can crossover with the nav (as you need 3 hours solo nav out of the 5 hours total nav) and do your test.
