That's a real shame for the GCR.

There was some other video of the steam crane being brought it but it ends just when they reach the interesting bit! Hopefully some footage of the re-railing will appear soon as that could be quite fascinating ...

"Well, unlike most of our galas this one did not leave us unscathed, and we have a lot of
work to do. Details of the Ivatt 2's excursion onto the ballast are reported elsewhere, I will
just comment on the damage as I see it from a poke around underneath. As the loco was
moving backwards, you would expect more damage to the tender, and this is what we
have. In fact the engine seems to be almost unmarked, except for ballast scraping on the
bottom of the spring hanger bolts. We did, however, have to cut the drawbar, on which
the loco and tender apparently lurched apart. The main damage to the tender is to the
brake gear, with the massive cross beams being, bowed up in the middle. One guard iron is
also off. Not sure how long it will take to rectify, but wouldn't mind betting that the
paperwork will take longer that the engineering. We have already located a replacement
drawbar.

Looks like the loco got off pretty lightly with the majority of the damage restricted to the tender. The comment seems to suggest they don't think it is too bad to repair fortunately.

First question has to be, don't you check the signal?

When I was on the footplate of the 04, both driver and fireman checked and confirmed every signal.

This pair whistled, but i didn't see any check of the signal?

The catch points are there for a reason, and did exactly what they were supposed to do, that being to stop unauthorised movements from the sidings onto the main line. A bit of bent brake mechanism is much better than a collision between two trains.

Basic crew error, I hope they learn from it.

Discussion on other sites, say that the driver had been given verbal to pass the signal. If this was by the signalman then he is a fault for not setting the road, likewise if it was from 'ground level' thayt person should have checked. either way it was human error, but on whom will have to wait until the enquiry. The only thing that surprised me is that the driver did not drop the lot on seeing the tender go overboard. Engine appears still under power as it hits the ballast and carries on, unless the weight of the carriages pushed it

It didn't actually, and there are a lot of very complimentary letters from people who were there on the newsletter last week. There were some complaints (obviously), but most treated it as a bonus to see the steam crane operating!

I read the complaint on youtube whilst the video was starting, thought "that's a bit harsh having a pop at them over some admin error" then got to the bit when the train fell off the track. Oops.
