Why cant it be moored up in Pompey as a museum piece, after all theres plenty of room

Maybe it should be moored in Leith Docks.

Think she's moored alongside HMS Belfast atm.

HMS Illustrious arrives at Greenwich tomorrow afternoon.

Tours of Illustrious planned for later this week as part of the Battle of the Atlantic commemoration.

I live right on the Thames at Woolwich and I've missed every carrier so far...GRRR!

Proper looking boat that, none of this silly modern all angles stuff :-)
Question: why does the hull look like the skin has been crushed over the ribs / runners?
(Because it has or is it some kind of additional armour/ RF treatment?)

AFAIA yes.

Am gonna get the Thames Clipper home, so will get some pics if the weather clears up.

The hull is only about 8mm thick.
Designed so if something hits it - it hopefully passes straight through and out the other side.
Only the plating around 'important' areas is beefed up.
The dents in the plating are from 20+ years at sea getting battered by the waves.

That was why the stretched 42's had the strenghtening belt fitted that runs from the 4.5 to mid hanger to try and stop them flexing. I remember being in serious roughers off Chile in 89 on York....standing at the arse end of two deck watching the whole ship twist, and watching a crack in the corner of the engineers workshop door open and close....all good fun.
