Genoa harbour control collision.

Seems to be a lot more information coming out about this now, sounds like the engines failed and the back swung out, given that many of those that died were in the lift they may well have seen it coming. Easy to say with hindsight but that tower was very vulnerable.

Irrespective of why the accident happened it does seem remarkable that such a vulnerable structure was erected in that position. Be interesting to know if they are also looking at the design and construction of the tower to see if it should have been designed and built to absorb the impact from this sort of accident.
looking at the before pics it looks like this tragedy could have been avoided at the design stage. as posted above there's no protection to the tower or control building at all.
some news reports have said the captain is under arrest for the deaths but surely the port pilots were in charge of the vessel during the manouvere.
lots of pics here including a couple of the damaged stern of the Jolly Nero.

The Captain is still in charge even with pilots onboard
I would have thought it would be like here where they are initially arrested so they can be cautioned and interviewed and then de-arrested if necessary. The Captain is still in charge even with pilots onboard
