Not pretty looking; forward 1/2 of fuselage intact, rear rather less so. No vertical stabiliser visible, which is in line with early eye witness reports that "the tail of the plane came off".

Looks like everything behind the aft pressure bulkhead has fallen off. Fuselage roof burnt out now - hopefully everyone got off before the fire took hold

Looks to have broken off very "neatly" around the rear bulkhead from my limited knowledge from various Aircrash Investigation episodes.

Tail strike or fatigue? Can't be too much else that would account for the tail simply breaking off on landing can there?

Worrying if it's fatigue.
The 777 is rated the safest aircraft based on its accident safety record and high number of flight hours according to wiki.

Watching this on Fox now.

Major fire damage to the top of the fuselage. The cabin area looks to be totally burned out. One engine by the side of the plane. It looks like the plane scraped along on its belly for a long time. Only one of the exit chutes looks like it has been deployed.
Some reports of serious burn injuries but looking at the damage, it almost seems as bad as the Manchester 737 fire. Hopefully not.

There are reports that the entire tail section fell off just before landing. I am no engineer in the slightest but it does looks like a very neat break at the rear bulkhead.

Pictures on Sky news seem to show the initial strike JUST after/at the runway boundary with San Fran Bay. Debris all over the sea/rock wall and before the tarmac runway begins.

Debris trail starts before the runway threshold - as if the aircraft undershot the runway and nearly ended up in the water, scraping its underside off on the shoreline

news pictures on bbc show tail at the runway threshold. damage to the runway seems to suggest some sort of tail strike. i'd guess at too low entry and resultant tail strike on the san fran bay wall.

all pass and crew accounted for, which is good news
