A 'Train Expert' was saying on R4 this morning that even if the driver wanted to entre the turn too fast the on-board systems should have prevented it. This is a new length of track and new rolling stock so there will be many questions that need answering.

R.I.P. all of those who lost their lives. A terrible tragedy.

Something not quite right between the lead and second car by the look of it, just before it all went sideways.

It looks like the train is already into the bend before in comes into view. That may be why the 2-3 carriage is already in trouble. The footage only shows the train after the derailment has started.

On a rail forum someone has stated that there were no speed limiting systems on that stretch of the line.

That seems like poor design. Again the discussions on R4 said this was the first bend as the route enters more built-up areas. A prime location to slow a HST down to negotiate this section of track?

You'd think so, it seems the European Train Control System (ETCS) for the high speed line ends about a mile before the crash site (about 40 seconds at line speed) The Spanish trains then use a system of control called 'Legacy" this does not provide overspeed protection. I'll never call our TPWS (Train protection and warning system) again!

Looks like it, but there's also a big change of height between the engine/half carriage and the 2nd carriage that can make it look odd.

It would have been at high speed on the long straight section (but not necessarily 'overspeed') and should have slowed on the approach to the bend. It would appear for whatever reason, it didn't slow.

Or to put it another way, it was coming from a FAST section into a SLOW section. Not the other way around.

Comments also that he started braking too late for curve as the train would have been well north of 200kmh just before where it is straight.
