Mariner 55 a pistonhead type boat question

I'm a sailboat person, so I can usually tell why my 'engine' isn't working. A mate of mine on the other hand has just bought himself an old speedboat and thereby has become an aquachav. Unfortunately in doing so he has encountered a problem with his engine which we are struggling to get to the bottom of.
All works well, the engine is sweet, runs well, pumps water and gives the boat a respectable turn of speed. The problem comes when selecting reverse - at which point the motor cuts out every time. We are assuming that the gearbox has no synchro or clutch and so there is some sort of ignition cut to allow the gears to select, but if so we can't for the life of us find the switch! We also can't find anywhere a manual for a mariner 55, which is frustrating.
In the spirit of pistonheads being able to answer any question on any subject, I therefore put it to the forum in the hope that someone may be able to help me appear all knowledgeable and earn me many fishing trips in my mate's boat by being able to quickly diagnose the faulty/out of adjustment bits. Because secretly inside this old wooden sailing dinghy owner, who mocks as the speedboats tear past, is an aquachav bursting to get out.

I would appear to be a common problem.

Whilst mine is a Mercury 135hp (Mariner/Mercury, same engines different labels), engaging forward or reverse is quite often accompanied by a clunky noise, the slower you engage the gears the more it rattles. No synchro & no cutout. Entirely normal.
I very occasionally have it cut out when cold unless I up the revs slightly then let it settle back before engaging. No issues when warmed up.
I wonder if adjusting your idling revs slightly higher would help? Carb(s)need cleaning out?
I do recommend getting a genuine manual.
