Now before you think it is a bit pricey,the guy says the whole kit cost 8k and it is nearly a bolt together job. Plus the fact you can drive it yourself( coal fired, wil pull about 15 adults!!)
To give you an idea of what it would cost you starting out from scratch. and making the whole kit an caboodle yourself
The castings will be about 2k inc VAT
A ready built boiler tsted etc about 2k
Addtl material .brass and copper sheet for the platework, various bits of mild steel round and bar, brass bar, phos bronze bar etc, you could add upwards of £500,Then there is the screws bolts etc another £300
Now you get onto the really heavy costs
Lets assume you want to go for it, you need a lather
s/h Myford Super 7 basic about 2k
Then drills set 1-80,A-Z, 1/64 to 3/4 anothr £200
Then set of taps dies an reamers £500
accessories for the lathe, vert slide ER collet sets say another 1K
digital mikes verniers £200
Now you need a miller/drill 1.5K luckily most of the lathe bits will move across
Aeivert silver soldering kit and how to panelbeat ( get the slope of the front wrong, and you are shagged!!)
Got a workshop at least 10x8 ( i speak from experience of a 9x7 hutch) get it brick built 3k?
And allow yourself at least 4 years build time, less if you have the knowledge of model engineering
and off you go. BUT it is really satisfying to see stuff emerge from a lump of metal.
however Modelworks will give you a running model in about 6 months and this chap has done quite a bit alrady. It WILL need fettling up cosmetically,( changing slot screws for hex etc) and I would recommend you join a Model engineering club at once for the tons of free and helpful assistance
so
I think this may go for 6k tops an opposed to 10k up front for your own workshop
Me, i have gone the costly way, but it doesnt hurt the pocket over 20 odd years!!
Apart from that ,any other Model Engineers out there?
