What just flew over!? U2?

About 15 minutes ago, quite low over Swindon heading North.
I'm far from an expert plane spotter, but to my eye it looked like it looked just like a U2.
Almost exactly like this, in fact:

How do you know that? Where did they come from - straight over from the US somewhere?There used to be a permanent unit based at RAF Alconbury back in the cold war era of the 1980's.

On an unrelated topic, I used to provide the SHORAD cover for Fairford, only ever saw aircraft use it for an exercise just before something exciting happened.

Remember watching them come in at Aki. In the middle of the blazing summer they still had ice on the wings through the steepness of their approach.Swindon in the late 90s was a great place for USAF spotting.
I was on top of Barbury Castle one afternoon and a half dozen or so B52s flew over en route to their deployment at Fairford. This was in advance of bombing Kosovo I think. Amazingly big old birds.
Fairford air show, was always a great time of year, loads of stuff about then. Plus of course you had the Hercules activity at Lyneham, I could watch them going lazily around from my office all day long.
The best planes I never saw. I was living near Kemble (they used to have some resident old jets that would fire up every now and then and get the spotters around, plus great excitement when a 747 was brought in on a final flight before being dismantled for scrap) at this point and whatever it was that used to make night time sorties over to Yugoslavia/Albania used to make me nearly fall out of bed when they either went over or came back in at 0400hrs! Either B52s or B1s I think, possibly even B-2s so local pub legend went. Bloody loud whatever they were.
