Cool view out of the (Dreamliner) window this morning :-)

wing looks floppy
Really enjoyed the flight, as said above, windows are pretty cool and there seemed to be more leg room than I'm used to in cattle class. Also noticed that we were cruising at 41,000ft for much of the flight, sure this is quite a bit higher than other passenger aircraft? Ground speed was also looking pretty sweet at over 600mph, again, sure this is faster than 747s etc?

They certainly move around quite a bit during take off
They actually have flapping mechanisms. It means the engines need less power and so save fuel.rowey200 said:

Depends what the head/tail wind is. 100mph behind you and bingo, you're doing 700mph ground speed. Head the other way and you're only doing 500mph.rowey200 said:
Couple of pics just because! Just about to pop through the clouds off the coast of Wales this morning. Think I had the best seat for a view of the trick looking wing, which I think you'll agree, looks almost as good as the view
Loved the Dreamliner, a very chilled out flight

A. Why do you think the wing looks "trick"?

B. Why do you think the wing looks particularly good?
There is nothing particularly trick about the 787.

I assume he enjoys the beautiful shape of the wing and the fact that it flexes upwards more than other wings. Perhaps he appreciates the aerodynamic properties of the new design cleaner wing with smaller fairings and cruise flaps reducing drag and the more efficient and aesthetically pleasing raked wing tip? B. Why do you think the wing looks particularly good?

Its not a new design. DJRC said:

Every single aspect of the wing has been done before.
From an engineering pov there is jack s
t special about it. We've been buggering about with all this stuff for 30 yrs. The only really trick/pushing the envelope stuff with the 787 was the engines. And even they were "obsolete" in design terms by the time of first flight. The XWB stuff was another leap ahead again and there was only (give or take) 3 yrs between the two. Now XWB, *that* has some seriously trick s
t in it.rowey200 said:

Indeed. Most large passenger jets seem to cruise at between 35,000 and 38,000, but I've noticed from noseying on Flightradar that 787s always seem to be up at 41,000. The only time I've been that high was on an American 757 from LHR to BOS which climbed to 41,000 for the last couple of hours to avoid bad weather which we subsequently had to descend through into BOS... which was 'interesting'
