LGW holding patterns now

Looking on plane finder I can see almost everything going into lgw is holding for long time, some in more than one pattern. Is this down to xmas holidays or the weather? Just curious.

Reading the BBC News page about the storm there are comments from passengers having aborted landings at Gatwick and being diverted to Manchester.

I live about 20 miles from LGW and wouldn't have wanted to land there with the wind that was gusting last night. Possibly the worst since 1987.

It was bumpy as hell taking off from there last night.
From all accounts there was a power failure at the north terminal this morning which would have led to planes being out of position on the stands, which I guess would lead to planes having to wait longer to land.

All down to wind. The phrase "rough as old boots" is one way to describe it. When you have weather like that, you increase the seperation and so you get delays and more holding. Then throw in gust when it goes way out of cross wind limits, then you have a whole heap of fun for ATC and then company ops departments to sort out.

We had 7 inbounds last night at Farnborough, all but two did go arounds and decided to diver to Stanstead.

Interesting, thanks guys. A friend of mine who works as an engineer at lgw just sent me some pictures of some of the flooding at the north terminal. I will try and post them, the underground electrical areas are all underwater!

Glad the design was well thought out, what could possibly go wrong with 'underground electrical areas'?, it's not like water flows downhill or any nonsense like that!
