Dramatic video of a plane crash that killed a woman off the coast of Hawaii last month shows the moment of impact and an orderly evacuation of the fuselage by passengers, who used plane debris to stay afloat as they waited to be rescued.
Passenger Ferdinand Puentes, 39, was on the 2002 Cessna Grand Caravan and captured the footage of passengers' bracing for impact moments before the plane crashed into the water Dec. 11.

That's a great video but for the sad fatality. The news reader is, as always, annoying though - alarms sounding, spiralling in to the ocean etc etc.
I must say - that was a well executed ditching. I don't know anything about why they ditched however - anyone know? I guess the NTSB are still looking in to it.

Because 'plane glides to gentle stop in sea, no panic' is not exciting.Everything these days must must be crash bang wallop woo. I think the phrase is 'Don't let facts get in the way of a good story'.

Didn't appear to be too far from land so hopefully everyone was alright.
Can think of worse places to go down though. I think that sort of landing in the sea just off a caribbean island would be best. Just kick off your shoes, remove your shirt, exit the plane and swim the rest of the way. Though that looked a bit far out for a swim mind. Also do they have sharks in the water around those parts?

It does look like a good touchdown - Would I be right in assuming that given there wasn't any warning from the pilot (people not braced etc...) that the buzzer was the first warning that something had failed?
Also, I agree, the news anchor is creating a crisis out of a drama.
Something else I thought - if the aircraft was going down, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it in case clothing or something got snagged on it. Seemed there were lots still clinging to it towards the end.

N687MA - a Cessna Grand Caravan.
That buzzer sounded like the stall warning had come on which sounds reasonable given that the crew presumably wanted to the lowest possible airspeed when the fixed undercarriage made contact with the water without actually stalling it.

Sounds like some folk were in the water for 80mins which canät have been pleasant but it could have been so much worse.
