At a talk given by one of the test pilots before Christmas the speaker mentioned that if the front lift fans stops while in the hover (so as to cause that kind of manoeuvre) the pilot has half a second to eject. Having decided that was unrealistic they developed an auto eject system to sort it out for them, so in reality the pilot wouldn't get the chance to try that sort of stunt...computer says no.

I have a funny feeling that considering the amount of power going through the fan transmission and blades, any catastrophic failure would result in a "2 part" plane in less than a second anyway....

I had to look it up, Graham Tomlinson (http://www.loughborough-raes.org.uk/). Some of the videos from Harrier testing were hair raising to say the least, he said the F35 was mundane in comparison!

GT is a most excellent bloke! So laid back it's untrue. Had the pleasure of working with him a few years ago before he went stateside.
