It's a big lump that uses brute force and ignorance to beat gravity into submission. I can see how Lightning would be inappropriate

It should, because at one stage the F-22 "Raptor" was named the Lighting II too.The American's often forget about earlier aircraft they have built that carried the same name.
The Vought F4U Corsair of WW2 was actually the second Vought design to be called Corsair. When the jet Corsair II was built in the 1960s, it should really have been the Corsair III.
