I don't often post in this forum, as I don't know a whole lot about aircraft, but I do enjoy reading the various topics, and enjoy watching the flybys on Youtube smile
Today I saw a Chinook go over us in Old Sarum, Salisbury around 2.30-3.00, with what looked like a Jeep suspended under it. It then rumbled over again about 15-20 minutes after that, then not long after that I saw a what looked like a Tornado go over. It had the swept back wings, and around 2-3 pods under each wing. I had thought they weren't flying them any more, but Wiki suggests I'm wrong!
Does anyone have any idea what they've been doing in the area today? Just curious is all, it's been a while since I've seen so much activity in the area!

How about.... a bloke with a helicopter stole a fighter pilot's jeep, and the pilot went after him to get it back?

ha that could be it! ;-)
never mind, thought it might have been something going on, but they might have just been taking advantage of the weather! :-)

The chinook was just doing a troop insert into Salisbury plain, the tornado was surely coincidental, you still have the tornado flying from 41sqn Coningsby and the squadrons at Marham.

The tornado GR4 is still in service, it was the F3 (fighter/interceptor) variant that was retired.

Some GR4s at Boscombe which as you'll know is just a stone's throw from Old Sarum. I fly locally and see Boscombe Tornados quite regularly.

Thanks for the info all, much appreciated! Had forgotten about the Tornados at Boscombe Down, good point!
