Anyone here done this ? I'm giving it some serious thought and a self 40th birthday present. Seems they give you near total control for most of the flight and not just passenger ride. I was watching some of the videos of people who have done this and even for those with no piloting experience ( like me ), it still seems well worth doing, although I think maybe taking a couple of lessons to get a feel of the controls would be worth doing here first ? Thoughts ?

I haven't but a colleague of mine did a few years ago.

He said it was well worth the money. Formation flying with the other one, flown by a current F-15 fighter pilot. He did everything bar the landing but then he is an experienced pilot in the general and commercial world.

IMHO, with regards to yourself, some lessons first certainly wouldn't hurt but no where near necessary.

I hope you do go for it and enjoy. It's on my todo list at some point....

My dad did it a few years ago and wrote it up for Pilot magazine. He loved every second of it. It's a big, noisy, heavy (on the controls) beastie (in a good way!). It'd definitely be something you'd never forget! I'd say go for it!

The Collings Foundation offer a similar thing in their P-51C (which is the only dual control C version flying)

And because you can book a slot on any of their nationwide US annual tours (your not fixed to travelling to Florida only) and that flight, if your lucky, might include flying alongside one of their B-17 or B-24 bombers.
