I do like the way the Telegraph describes a Stingray torpedo as a 'missile'.

In the 1980s I was involved in the investigation of an F4 Phantom which shot down a Jaguar with a 9G Sidewinder, the Jaguar crashed and the pilot got out If it had been the 9L missile things would have been very different.

Probably not actually, given that it was a stern shot and as soon as the 'winder went off the rail the Jag pilot was called to eject.

Had it been a Fox One however (face shot).....

The 9L with the AOTD would probably have exploded alongside the aircraft, therefore a chance that the cockpit would be damaged by the metal rods that cover the warhead.

We were informed that the pilot felt the impact, so he was still in the cockpit, albeit for a very short time.

Interesting point, I think that the proximity fuse went off all right, under the rear fus.

Yes. A pea fired from a peashooter, a poison dart fired from a tribesman's blowpipe or a blackboard eraser thrown at an unruly pupil is a missile.
