Did anyone see Kevin McLeod's 'Supersized Salvage' A320 recycling programme on Channel 4 last night?

I thought one of the best things they made was a range of desk lamps made from assembled components from the seats:



Selling for £700 according to the show!

Saw it, and thought much of it looked like overpriced tat.

The light is a case in point. For a tenth of the cost I can get something that is made for the job. Does coming from a plane multiply the value by ten?

Would I pay that for it? No. I don't think the fact that it's come from a plane makes it worth a lot - in this case the prices were inflated by the fact that the pieces were being sold as limited run sculptures in an auction environment, the 'Kevin' connection would also add perceived value in some buyers eyes. The cost of making these will be higher than any desk lamp because you have to extract the parts from their original installation (the seat) and then modify them to go together as an item they were never intended or designed to be. Even if you started doing it on an industrial scale it wouldn't be as economical as making a purpose designed lamp and therefore the retail price has to reflect that.

One of the designers on the Show, Max, was once on Dragons Den with his up-cycled shopping trolley chairs. Theo Paphitis was really up for investing and reckoned he could get ready made shopping trolley chairs mass produced in china for a fraction of the price. Max turned him down because that wasn't the point of his business model - I think it was the right choice.

I guess it's a form of art, and that commands a price increase - Phillipe Starck's Alessi 'Rocket' orange juicer can be seen in many a fashion conscious kitchen, but it's lousy at it's intended task and scratches your worktop - it helped him become very wealthy though!
