This was posted in the Jag XF forum I frequent. One of the FMs is on the BBMF crew as Lanc pilot. Thought I'd repost here.

Enjoy.

Hopefully this won't go the same way as other interesting you tube vids.

Great to watch. I've got two mates/colleagues who flew the Lancaster with the BBMF in their RAF days. There cannot be much to match that for an experience.

Great vid, looks wrong having two pilots & corresponding yokes though. And yes I know the Campaign Against Aviation set the rules!

Last year we had a RAFA visit to Wattisham where we got to see the AAC Apache display.

I must say (as a fixed wing pilot) I thought it amazing.

However, later in the year we were at the Marham Families Day. I can honestly say that the Chinook display was the best display I have ever seen, period!

That is like watching a hippopotamus dance Swan Lake. It shouldn't be possible! Amazing for a 50 year old design.

So who forces the dual pilot requirement then?

2007 was its best year. Went downhill rapidly after that. Allegedly.

Not the CAA.

Post war, Lancasters were often converted to two pilot configuration as they are a big enough aircraft to warrant having a co-pilot. During World War 2 it was only down to shortage of trained pilots (and the high probability of losing them on ops) that caused the switch to single pilot operation for the RAF's large four engined bomber.

Both the Wellington and Whitley, which were twin engined, were originally designed for pilot/co-pilot operations and all the American four engined heavies were also two pilot.

No one has forced it. As I understand it, it’s there primarily for new pilot conversion training, not for any rules regarding dual pilot flying.
IIRC, the extra yoke, pedal conversion is a bit of a Heath-Robinson conversion and came about after the RAF retired its Shackletons back in 1991. Up to then, prospective BBMF Lanc pilots underwent pilot conversion training up at Lossie with 8 Sqn on the Shack given it’s linear decent from the Lanc. Once the Shack fleet was retired, the dual yoke fit was deemed necessary to enable proper conversion for new pilots. That’s also why BBMF took on the ex-Boscombe Dak, which is used as the initial multi engine tail dragger conversion for new Lanc pilots, as well as a display item on it’s own.
