need advice in the Essex area before i die !

afternoon gents

im currently restoring a speed boat hull and before i put the engine on the back i would love some one who knows something about hulls to have a quick look over it to make sure im not

lining up an early funeral !

i bought the boat from ebay and it was in a bit of a state, the floor at the back was rotten but the rest was superficial and just needed a spruce.

im now a little worried that the transom may be rotten but dont know the best way to check !

anyone in the harlow area with a bit of know how who can help before i put a 90hp on the back and kill myself.

Easiest way is to take a hammer to it.

Not a big hammer but ring it to see if it sounds flat anywhere.

The obvious areas will be the top, anywhere it has been drilled to mount anything and of course anywhere you can see the grp covering has been comprised. If it has got wet then the strength will have gone.

Give it a wiggle. You need 'mechanic's feel' to tell you how much of a wiggle though. Enough to see how strong, but not too much to break it.

It's hard to advise without a pic or two, we don't even know the boat make from your original post.

It is likely that what you have is a plywood transom covered with grp but we don't know that either. Then on top the structures are all different with some being a full width transom, some with knee braces off the hogs etc etc.

As a general rule though if it's sopping wet then it's likely to be gone. Don't fret yet though!
