What is this? (Rope/cord question)

I have two short lengths of a type of rope which I found. I now find myself thinking that it would be useful to use quite a lot of this for a project, but don't know what it is to try and buy some more.

It looks like very thin climbing rope - around 2mm in diameter. It's circular in cross-section and not at all stretchy. I don't think it's paracord (although paracord would do at a pinch.) Here are a couple of pictures;





If I wanted to buy some more of this (probably about 20 or so metres) where would I need to go and how much should I look to pay?

Thanks - that's helpful. Googling 'Dyneema' has led me to a number of options. I don't need the Dyneema content as I don't need it to be that strong, and it seems there are plenty of choices.

Any climbing/caving/outdoor shop should have a range of diameters.

a synthetic rope of braid on braid construction is all you can tell from those pictures

- braided construction is visible

- ends have been hot cut or cut then heat sealed

probably not an aramid core ( as kevlar like nomex doesn't melt easily)

could be spectra / dyneema ultra high molecule weight PE or could be 'standard' polyethylene or nylon fibres in the core depending on intended use

Tell us what the project is and peeps can probably advise you on what string you want.

Climbing rope is hopeless on boats, and yacht rope will kill you in a climbing fall. Yacht rope needs to be non stretchy, and how non stretchy depends on the size of your wallet.

It's neither yachting or climbing - I want to make a cargo net, to a particular size, but it needs to be both functional as well as (semi-) decorative. The bits of rope I have lying around (in the pictures) struck me as being ideal for the job, but not long enough, hence the interest in what it is so that I can buy some more.

Size of the net is 1mx1m and the mesh size around 7cm. Loading will be fairly light. There are videos on YouTube about how to knot one and it doesn't look that hard. Being able to make it from a cord of my choice will make it significantly better than buying a standard off-the-peg net.

Chandleries can be quite expensive for that type of cordage unless you are near a big chain.

Your local, Yacht Rigger would be your best bet. they may have an off cut or end of a reel going cheap. failing that they would be able to get you exactly what you need.

I did my apprenticeship as a Rigger, and id say if you don't need a particularly strong net then anything dyneema/spectra or Kevlar would be over kill. just a tightly braided nylon rope would be the most cost effective solution, and be plenty strong enough.

the rope you have looks like it could be Marlow Excel they did a version in dyneema and nylon. if, as others have said if the white core doesn't melt it just sort of bobbles up it will be dyneema.

edit - scrap that, this is what you have. I new id seen it somewhere. they do a dyneema and nylon versions as well i think.

Looks like boaty rope,as stated above it's probably overkill for general purpose projects but you can buy similar here: http://www.dinghy-rope.co.uk fairly cheaply.

looks like Spectra. Non stretch and v strong. Not cheap.

If I was making a decorative cargo net. I'd be going for a modern take on a more traditional hemp-looking rope. Again, most of the usual rope suppliers can help here.
