... a twin-engined jet (looked like an airliner) being escorted by 4 fighters (couldn't tell what, my plane-spotting days went out when I stopped building Airfix kits 35 years ago).
Flying in a V-formation, the left outer fighter was further out and further back than the others.
Seemed to do at least three laps of a 20-minute circuit at quite high altitude; anyone any idea what was happening?

So why the three aerial laps of the county? biggrin The USA is west from here, they were flying a clockwise circuit so kept coming IN from the west and turning south!

We did wonder at first if it was a hijack and the fighters were there to shoot it down if the situation developed biggrin

Could well have been the four jets that came over me on the Old West about 10 days ago; they'd just taken off and came over one after the other at 30 second intervals, turning east.

They transited the Wash Area at around 2.30/3.00pm, I watched them fly over. They were followed later by a single KC135 Stratotanker. I understand that they were en-route back to California via Keflavik having spent some time on detachment here.

What they were circumnavigating the NE I am not aware.

Sightseeing maybe? (You never can tell with Spams!) smile

Seriously though, they were probably carrying out refuelling practice.
