Interesting little story, wreck gifted to Maritime Heritage Foundation which was founded by Lord Lingfield seemingly with the sole intention of raising the Victory... maybe he does have some tenuous links to the Admiral Balchen, maybe not, but there maybe £128M worth of Gold Bullion on board so whats the harm in digging it up to have a look. Scumbags the lot of 'em....

I don't see the problem. The family connection will be/has been perfectly possible to prove beyond doubt so that's not an issue. And is the ship a 'war grave'? It sank in a storm, not through enemy action.

People have been recovered things from shipwrecks for centuries. I think the Labour bod is simply on a sabotage mission for some reason.

Whilst I agree, its not a war grave per se, there are hundreds of other fgamilies invovled who may not wish for their son's final resting place to be destroyed in this manner.

You are right, its easy to determine if Lingfield and Balchen are related. They are not and Admiral Balchen's direct descendants do not want the wreck to be distrurbed. Lord Lingfield has however claimed Balchen as his own, amended the spelling on his family history website and uses the old "they didnt keep very good records in the olden days" excuse.... Then establishes the MHF and is gifted the ship that just so happens to reputedly have £128M of gold on board, signs a deal to raise it in the name of acheological interest of course... its a very interesting test case and could lead to a precedence that sees every potential gold mine sold to salvage hunters raised to the surface regardless of the wishes of the relatives...

A chart there shows Balchen and Balchin to be related, though not directly. That's fair enough; I am 'related' to Admiral Sir John Franklin but only very tenuously!

So Balchin by claiming direct descendancy is stretching the truth a bit on that score, but I do wonder what the antagonists's issue really is. They say 'Despite media speculation, there is scant evidence of any treasure or bullion on board', so it can't be the money...

I doubt there are any known descendants of the crew, but stand to be corrected. So the indignation APPEARS to rest solely on the disturbance of a war grave... hmm.

I agree, its just an interesting diversion on an otherwise long and drawn out day.

I got a DVD the other day which had the odyssey project on it.

So far when they go to the wreck they have found 2 skulls and report it back to the navy which when they ask them to stop they do, but each time they go it's been disturbed by finishing boats and other treasure hunters.

IMHO they should let Odyssey salvage it, before the fishing industry completely wrecks it (pun intended). At least then if or when they find human remains, they can be reburied, rather than smashed to pieces i ignorance.
