Norwegian Airlines Pilots' Strike
Discussion
I've heard that their pilots are paid a significant amount over industry average and that the bosses want to reduce this to only just over industry average, I could be wrong as it's all heresay, but I am short on sympathy for these pilots who are preventing me from travelling as I am used to,
It takes two to tango in any industrial dispute, but it's always the customer that suffers.
Pilots aren't generally known for going on strike that often (unless they are French or from one of the old US carriers) so it takes a lot for it to actually happen, so I'd probably be directing my ire at the management at NAS as well as the pilots in your instance.
It's a pretty rubbish situation all round really.

I'm stuck in Tromso at the moment - was supposed to fly out today. Had two flights cancelled so far - looking like wednesday at the earliest even if the strike gets resolved in the next few hours.
I'm not holding my breath. Luckily there are plenty of alternative options for me, so I'll not be booking Norwegian again until (if ever) the dust well and truly settles.BrabusMog said:

As far as I know that is not the case, the last I heard Norwegian new pilots where told to pay £20,000 for the type rating this would secure them a job on the 737 but due to internal reasons many of these pilots where then sacked about 3 months down the line. I believe the pilots are trying to get job security they deserve.

Fancy having to pay your employer to actually work for them!!! WTF all LCC's are the same and the little rich kids are ruining the industry because of this.
I've been led to believe the contracts suck!those LH pilots have vague ones at that and no rights, I hear the 787's they are recruiting for will have LGW base with Singapore contract.
The bean counters rule & keep the shareholders happy, increasing the dividends and cutting costs by any means, usually at the detriment of those that they need most, the operating crew (yes I'm including cabin crew too
)I have little sympathy for most striking workforces, but this is the management hen coming home to roost.
They have flouted several loopholes in their operation, regarding their flight crew employment and their Air Operators Certificate (AOC), and it's landed them in hot water.
Their pilot pay is poor, particularly with the European social taxes they face. They're also employed as contractors, so they transfer all such liabilities to the employees. They are a Norwegian carrier, but their long haul AOC I believe is Irish, enabling them to take advantage of Openskies, and the US access it offers. However, the employment contract officially bases the crew in Bangkok or Singapore, I believe, so they can govern their crew under Asian employment laws.
The short haul operation has a whole litany of issues, too.
Very sketchy.

That's not true at all. Norwegian pilots are poorly paid and have industry bottom terms and conditions. They're only slightly better than Ryanair.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
