Low flying Hercules near Lyneham

Over the past few months I have noticed quite a few examples of exceptionally low flying of Hercules aircraft in the general area of RAF Lyneham, which of course closed in 2012.

Presumably they are on training exercises of some kind, but does anybody know any more about it?

Don't forget that when Lyneham closed the Hercs moved to Brize Norton, which is only a few minutes flying time away. I live in the area and although we see fewer than we used to, they have never really gone away.

When Lyneham was open their training flights were often in groups, two, three or four sweeping through at low level within a few seconds of each other. Now they are nearly always single planes and far less frequently. Great to see.

We get them over Gaydon in Warwickshire every so often. Pretty low, and they seem to use the AML main office as a waypoint.

Hercs fly around in singletons or pairs nowadays, not anything bigger unless it's for an event. When low-flying, Lyneham is seen as a semi-friendly waypoint on the way from Brize to the more open South-West of the country, avoiding all the controlled airspace nearby and plus it's a nice bit of nostalgia/ depression to fly over. Gaydon is a good feature in that part of the country to fly over not only because it's a huge runway that can be used for simulated approaches or drops but also because it's the JLR place and it's something cool to look at. Hope it hasn't caused anyone any bother...

I love it when anything military comes over Gaydon. I wish they'd frequent this part of the world a bit more.

Sorry, off topic, but we had a real treat last year with the Vulcan Cold War tour. Was more of an air display than the flypast I expected.

About 20 years ago I worked at the old Chipping Warden airfield site, and several times a day we would see Tornados, Harriers, B1's and other Military planes flying past at low level.

we are doing work there and have been to some time, its becoming a training centre so will be MOD lyneham not RAF

Spent 4 and a half years there.. Always RAF for me

When is it due to open? Any news on the units that will move there?
