Watched this last night and enjoyed it, although a tad disappointed they didn't show any of the flight within mainland Europe. Open cockpit in December from Crete to UK must have been a tad chilly!
Quite lucky the engine misfire showed up when it did too, wouldn't have been fun over the Med.

Ms Curtis-Taylor... failed to realise that the combination of altitude and heat meant her engine would develop insufficient power to climb.
There was a great documentary about a Catalina flying the old Empire route down to South Africa. They landed on a high altitude lake but couldn't get off again. They had to offload the filmcrew and pick them up elsewhere!

Density Altitude is the result of the relationship between altitude, temperature, and air density.
At increased Density Altitudes the air is effectively 'thinner', ergo wings produce less lift, engines produce less thrust.
Also, for a given IAS (Indicated Airspeed) the TAS (True Airspeed) is commensurately higher. Thus the momentum is higher.

OK let me try to simplify.
As Altitude increases air gets less dense although the decrease in density will be affected by surface level pressure.
This gives you something called pressure altitude.
However, as air gets hotter it gets less dense, independant of the pressure altitude.
Ergo, in order to take account of the relationship between pressure and altitude and between temperature and air density we can calculate Density Altitude.
An increased Density Altitude refers to the decrease in air density caused by either/or an increase in altitude, decrease in pressure, increase in temperature. nie an increase in Density Altitude is referring to an increase in equivalent altitude but also taking temperature into account.
