I have a rule, if its not raining the roof must go down.

When driving home from work (I usually finish between midnight and 3am) I drive home and look up at the stars - I do keep my eyes on the road, though at that time there are few cars about - also to add, this is big open B-roads with only a grass verge to hit before I get a load of hate saying how dangerous it is, despite the fact I doodle along at 20mph.

Last night, there was a big brown streak in the sky that went on as far as the eye could see - I assumed it was just a vapor trail from an airplane. Though, it was much, much thicker, maybe 7 or 8 times thicker than vapour trails normally are.

Anyways, driving home, this brown streak isn't disappearing and when I got home it was still in the sky and went on as far as the eye could see... What was it?

It was a VERY clear night last night, probably the clearest its been for as long as I can remember, normally you can see a dozen on so stars dotted about but last night there were loads, hundreds in fact... So I assume its just something in space that was visible - if so, what?

I've done a picture of it so you can see what I mean - in reality, it wasn't as clear as that and you could barely make it out against the night sky but it was definitely there, also, the stars in the photo are to show the streaks size from my POV.

Also, in the photo, it being smaller on the right denotes the streak in the distance.

And no, the big brown streak wasn't an aliens skid mark, or Gods skid mark etc! biggrin

Vapour trail which had dissipated and was reflecting the lights of a nearby town is my guess

Bloody hell! On skimming your post I thought that was the actual photo at first and has a definite WTF moment there laugh

Are the dark lines/areas in the night sky not known as anti aurora?

I'd wager it was a dissipating contrail that was reflecting the light from towns, as already mentioned.

That big thick one near the top looks like it...

Only difference is it was pitch black and the streak was very faint, dark brown.

What is it, and how comes it was so long? (13 mile drive and then as far as the eye could see when I got home).

It most likely was a very high, spread out contrail which could still see over the horizon and catch some of the sunset glow.

There are some better examples but I can't find them right now.

Being me I would of course like to suggest the passage of a UFO though no doubt it was a much more mundane aeroplane vapour trail i.e. not airplane.

Well as the OP doesn't know the identity of the aeroplane causing the trail, it is for him evidence of a UFO...
