Just now two aircraft flew over Ashford, Kent in formation. I couldn't figure them out at first, but the lead one looked like a TBF Avenger, are there any flying in the UK? I couldn't quite tell what the smaller one behind it was, perhaps a P-51 but they were both at bad angles.

The suspected Avenger certainly looked the part, big, single engine, right shape, but I didn't think there were any of those flying over here, and a quick Google seems to back that up. I hope it was one though, never seen one flying before.

Ah, good find. Looking at the owner's Facebook page it lives in France and they flew over the channel a couple of hours ago, which ties in with the time I saw it. They must have been transiting across to Duxford.

I remember the Swiss chap who now owns that Avenger turning up to North Weald to collect it - I thought a Yak was liable to generate a bit o smoke when starting up, but that thing was in another class - absolute clouds of it!

Technically, it's a TBM rather than a TBF. TBMs were manufactured by General Motors. Grumman built Avengers were designated TBFs.
