Noticed a weird little routine they use on United when a pilot wants to go to the loo - first they position two flight attendants in front of the flight deck door, then they put a drinks trolley sideways-on to block themselves in, then the pilot emerges and one of the flight attendants enters the flight deck and locks himself in, then the pilot goes to the loo. The whole process is reversed when he is finished.

Is this some new FAA requirement or just United being paranoid of passengers trying to rush the flight deck door, or one of the pilots going mental?

A response after the Germanwings crash? Although I think most of the American airlines were doing this since 9/11.

I was flying from Mexico to Glasgow last week and a pilot left the flight deck with his toothbrush, left the flight deck door wide open while he was in the toilet, I was next in the que for the toilet and the cockpit door remained open until he finished. I could just have wandered in! This really surprised me following the German Wings incident. If I hadn't seen with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it.

Crikey ..... I'd thought they'd be doing the endurance driver thing of just giving a small smile having passed something warm whilst still seated.

Can't be long before someone comes up with a design that includes a flight deck layout incorporating a galley unit in one corner and a piss tube in the other.

Isn't that why people were always advised to keep an empty 1 litre coke bottle in the boot - to pee in if you're caught in traffic! That's about all the airline pilot would need. Unless, of course, No2s are due.......

It should not be beyond the wit of man to design an airliner with a chemical toilet for the crew to use.

As done in WW2, much fun resulted if the ground crew didn't like the pilot & tied a knot in it....

Though of little use on a modern airliner as the end would be at -50C and frozen solid....

FFS, can't they just open the window?

Over France, of course.

Yer know some times, for an enthusiast, you come across as astonishingly ignorant about modern aircraft.

Huh? You suggested pee tubes in a modern airliner, not Eric.

Yes, and Eric pointed out that the concept is already there, conveniently forgetting that a WW1 fighter travelling at 100mph and a couple of thousand feet is slightly different to an airliner at close to the speed of sound at FL36.

That's the trouble with the aircraft industry, people always overthinking the problem.

The solution is simple
