MV Kungsholm, the very last liner built for export by John Brown's shipyard on the Clyde, is under threat of scrapping: however, an organisation has been formed to save her and their bid for the ship has been accepted provisionally. The plan seems to be to moor it permanently as a floating hotel at Gothenburg, much as has been done with SS Rotterdam in her home city. There is a website, http://www.mskungsholm.se - unfortunately it's all in Swedish, no English-language version available yet. They need public support, donations, and are running a share issue through which it seems you get your own cabin in the ship (or, presumably, first dibs on its use, I doubt they'd leave it empty when you're not around!). I'm trying to establish more as to their aims and credibility to get across the language barrier, as I believe this deserves British support. It would be a tragedy if she did end up going to the breakers. Bad enough that we lost SS France...

A very rough online translation of some of the pages can be found here:

The share sale seems to be on a similar basis to how you can now buy hotel rooms. You own the room but let it back to the hotel company to rent out. They pay you rent minus a service charge.

Interesting read, slightly confused by the cabin share though.

Says 6,500kr per share and each cabin has 20 shares so does that mean if I buy one share and I'm staying in it and someone rocks up that has 5 shares then I have to give it up as they have priority?

Ship now sold to the scrappers, but it's not over yet, the would-be preservationists are still fundraising to buy the ship off the scrappers, and currently have a week to do so... https://www.facebook.com/groups/kungsholm
