I remember the days when there was a permanent resident U-2/TR-1 detachment at RAF Alconbury......
Wasn't there 9 TR-1A's stationed at Alconbury at any one time( I know some went out to Germany and Italy ) , I logged something like 20 out of the 33 built over the course of the unit's time there.
I remember when the two seat U-2 turned up for ground instruction.
Also the U-2R's at Mildenhall with Det 4 9 SRW (saw 4 in total) and the truck that followed them down the runway to catch the wing tip's.
We used to 'rough' camp at the cabbage patch at the end of Mildenhall's runway, the U-2's made noise, but not as much the SR-71's and their entourage of KC-135Q's which always left about an hour before the SR.
