A hopefully massively theortical situation, but how would the Russians (or if you are really feeling way out, the Americans!) conquer the UK using conventional means? What would be their tactics, what assets used and how long would we last?

First, purchase most of the capital. Check.
Second, bring large amounts of money into the country on the pretext of escaping the cruel tyrant. Check.
Next, spread that money around and make sure that the politicians get as much as the footballists. Check.

Now simply resurrect a link between Elisabeth and Tsar Nicholas, and spread FUD around Charles capability. I for one welcome our new Slavic overlords

If you mean conquer as opposed to destroy, it would be like Nazi Germany overunning Holland. The only hurdle is how to get the men and materiel across the water.

It's good to know that the EU would (after about 3 months) send them a strongly worded letter of protest.

Blitzkreig. They would need to get air superiority and get armor on the ground. I think the citizens, police and armed forces would be able to repel a staged infantry invasion quite easily.

The hardest step would be them getting armor ashore in great numbers quickly enough, the Russians don't have the ships to do it.

They would have to do it very quickly before NATO could mobilise to support us.

I'm not sure the Russians would think it worth the effort.

Trucks and hardware in one tunnel.

It might be a case of 'resistance is futile'. The citizens would be powerless and I can't think what the police would do other than catch them speeding. The smart invader uses the host's police force to enforce his own rules against the populace. Anyone not agreeing gets shot.

I was thinking of an Arnhem-type operation, everything by air. Even light tanks would be enough.

Weight of numbers, think of any major city and the yob mentality that comes out with rioting etc, imagine the news reporting Russian forces had started trying to take central London or central Manchester with paratroopers.. It would be all "yeah, mate, bruv, init lets go batter us some reds and steal some tellies". That's how id imagine it going anyway sort of, perhaps. It really does depend on how many boots Russian can get on the ground in one go.

I think that there was a different mind set to the way the Germans fought and USSR at the time of WWII, especially from the commanders. If that ideology has persisted then we will be in for a very hard time.

Firstly, massive interference and misinformation to mask the fact that internationally Royal Navy ships are being effectively placed in quarantine in international waters by the overwhelming numbers of the US navy. Priority will be to the Subs, which must be sunk at all costs ( Sorry chaps), got to neutralise the threat of nuclear retaliation.

Next phase would be to move a carrier group 250 miles off the Irish Coast and establish an exclusion zone.

Then, the B52's, flying from US bases, a weeks worth of sorties firing cruise missiles from behind my carrier group to surgically dismantle the communication and military infrastructure.

Second carrier group parked in the North Sea and invite the PM on board for a little chat about maybe surrendering?

2-3 weeks, no boots on the ground, Job done, the UK, the 53rd state...

How are you going to qurantine the royal navy?
Or find the subs?
A carrier group off ireland will lead to international condemnation, and the rest of the world aginst you. Thimk of the craic, etc...

Plus the very obvious question: what would they do it?
And what about all the americans here at mildenhall, fairford etc etc.

What about Australia, Canada and UK troops in foreign lands? What you gonna do when Canada starts driving tanks south? What about the nuclear subs when you cant find them? What happens when Sweden and Norway send their attack subs to go to town on your fleet after they side with the UK, your fleet would be sunk quickly and Canadian Forces would be in DC in a couple of weeks if not sooner, with the full Australian, UK and Canadian special forces and some elite battalions, DC could probably be taken and held within a week.

In my fictitious senario, All American UK bases were overrun by the UK aggressors over 10 years ago, an act which ultimately led the the disution of NATO.
The action against the UK has full congressional support and as we are at a time of War, the homeland is full secured against any attacks.

I'm confident that my carrier group's destroyers and compliment of Subs can repel any hostile act from nations friendly to the UK.

A further 4 carrier groups were dispatched to deal with the Royal Navy.

Your move UK, how are you going to dislodge my carrier group as the air cover it provides for the B52's attacks is crippling your defences.

Sadly quite simple I would say.

1. Cripple the economy with some well-targeted terrorist attacks - major motorways, train lines, the city, business parks like TVP. Take out as much of the mobile and telephone network as you can.
2. Cyber attacks to cause a bit more panic.
3. Take out air defences - just Lossiemouth and Coningsby, so not much of a problem,
4. Take out deliveries of food and oil on ships.
5. Warn freight traffic into airports that it may be taken out.

Now wait a few days while the supply chain of food and energy runs out and wait for the white flag without needing to do much damage.

Perhaps it wouldn't be quite that easy, but it wouldn't be far away.
