What's this thing on railway station platforms?

I don't have a picture and not knowing what it is I can't Google for one so..

Whilst on the train recently I noticed that at most stations we stopped at, on the vertical face of the platforms was what best looked like a single "fader" a bit like you would see in a TV/radio studio, I can't think of a better way to describe what it looked like.

Does anyone know what they are please?

I can't claim to be a memory man but I came across the thread via Google!! I've often wondered myself what these things were.
