It's good to see. I have heard of this, but being from a helicopter background, we just stick the spare donk in the cabin. It's interesting to see they take the 1st stage compressor blades off and are essentially carrying the core engine in a shroud.
Good on Qantas though to make a video of it. Some good publicity there from a relatively simple task.

Clever idea, I presume they have plenty in hand in terms of wing loading etc most of the time anyway...

Cheaper than chartering a cargo aircraft that has a large enough door to fit the engine in.

I'm guessing Qantas didn't just fasten a bracket to the underside of the wing with some self tappers to fasten the engine to, but Boeing installed a hard point there from the get go. Is it there for just this scenario or for another reason?

So when I want to sit somewhere else on the aircraft where perhaps there is a completely empty row and the lovely steward(ess) smiles and says sorry the plane is loaded according to weight and we cannot allow you move because this will unbalance the aircraft.
That seams rather unlikely looking at that sodding great unbalanced weight.
Of course everyone could be sat starboard and it was me asking to sit on the port side though??

Sorry I just noticed it is balanced by the "tug" strapped to the starboard wing.

One reason for using engines on underwing pylons is actually to reduce wing loading. On the ground the wing's supporting the weight of of the engines, but in flight it's supporting the weight of the aircraft minus the weight of the engines.

Ever thought of going on a diet?

So my weight 13stone 3lb's would effect the dynamics of a jetliner?

Never understand why they use weight and balance of a "average human" to refuse people moving seats.
Do they actually log the weight and qty of hold luggage to determine the average weight so they know how many bags to distribute in which area of the hold?
Only the scales at check in don't appear to be linked to the pc's or are they? Genuine question

They generally just weigh the crates that they load the bags into, so that they know how much extra commercial cargo they can load.

You clearly know nothing about aviation! It's an American aircraft, so has imperial threads. Obviously it will be 6 3/8 UNF bolts! biggrin

We used to bolt a fourth engine on to Tristars at times. The front LP compressor blades would be removed and a conical fairing fitted to make it a bit more pointy.

Don't you mean that just the bending forces on the wing are reduced in flight with podded engines?

If the weight of something hanging off the wing drops to zero in flight, We'd surely have flying wings with under slung passenger pods and engines...

I think he means that the weight of the engines on the wings are not pivoting at the body/wing intersection like when on the ground, rather the forces are only acting through the engine mount points due to the lift generated along the whole length of the wing. Thus, the engines do not weigh anything at the wing/body intersection.

He's talking rubbish.

By dint of the extra weight overall the wing loading must increase.

Wing bending relief (ie countering the fact that once the wing is producing lift it will try to rise from the tip inboard) will be worse in the 5 engine configuration because the extra weight is more fuselage centric.
