Last year I and some friends went for our regular greasy fry up breakfast at Sleap Aerodrome. There are usually some nice planes there, but we were particularly impressed by two fibreglass Spitfires which were apparently accurate down to the last rivet.

They were there as props for the filming of a WW2 drama and cost £60k each. We were told that the company that made them would make you a replica of any plane you wished - they had recently made a replica of a Lightning for a wealthy client.

The AI-H codes carried on the Spitfire I were the codes used on some of the aircraft in the film "Battle of Britain". Because that film was shot in good quality colour, subsequent films and TV dramas and documentaries have used clips from the film and outtakes. Consequently, some more modern replicas have been painted in those codes as well for bits of new footage that could be slotted in.

That Spitfire might be an original "Battle of Britain" movie replica or one of the later ones.

The squadron code "AI" is fictional and was not used in World War 2.

The second replica is a Mark V. I've helped the owner push that around at a model exhibition.

Now that's interesting - I always thought the Mk V had a 3 blade prop and 3 siamesed ejector stubs each side; if you'd have shown me that pic and asked what it was, I'd have said Mk IX.
