offcuts of marine ply

I recently acquired a scorpion sailing dinghy, as a bit of a project , its been languishing in a garage for a few years and I am getting it ready for racing this summer. I need to repair a bit of its foredeck, with stripey sapele faced marine ply. I only need a couple of bits (8x7 inches) of 5mm ply. (or one larger piece (8x14)

I have asked a couple of boat builders that I know without success, so I am wondering if anyone here might be able to help me out, I dont really want to have to buy a whole sheet

Robbins in Bristol will do a 1/4 sheet I think.

I will phone robbins this week, but according to their pricelist they only sell stripey sapele in full sheets, in which case I suppose I could do a whole redeck, but that would take me longer and I want to go sailing.

They might have a outlet closer to you in the NE, worth asking that too.

Robbins are great. It's worth phoning – they have, or had last time I was there, a rack of odd off-cuts, all sorts of odds and ends.

On the subject of timber for marine use, I knew of John Barchard's timber yard up north and looked to see if they were in the NE. Found that he died a while back, had a good reputation for decent timber for boat builders.

the last time I needed some marine ply, I asked Rob Storrar (storrar marine) if there was a local supplier, he recommended Robbins....

Sawman, I believe there's some offcuts of marine ply lurking in our garage from when my brother re-did a Fireball a few years ago. Not sure that it's sapele faced stuff though. We're in the NE also (just south of Stockton). I'll have a look later and see if I can find it.

Try Phil at http://www.gingerboats.co.uk - tell him I sent you. He's made a couple of GP14s in recent years and looks to be making a lot of foils these days, but if he doesn't have any offcuts I'm sure he can point you in the right direction.

cheers chaps, I have pretty much contacted anyone I can think of, who might have a bit of ply, I have now decided to bodge the repair at this point to get me n the water this summer, and plan a proper redeck for next winter.

Yeah, had a look. What I thought was marine ply offcuts turned out to be regular 6mm ply. Not what you want.
