If I have read it right, it "only" cost $1.5 billion to develop and the rest is the production costs? Although I admit I don't really follow the accounting technique they have used. Have they smeared out the $32 billion over the entire production lifespan?

I remember back in the 90s when Boeing developed the 777 there was quite a few programmes on it, so it was huge development.

That said, I remember someone sayng that for the same development costs Boeing spent to get the 777, ford spent to get the original Mondeo..

$6bn is the figure I recall for the global CDW92 project that spawned the '93 Mk.1 Mondeo and the Mercury Mystique/Ford Contour US models.

It does make both the 777 (if it was the same cost) and 787 projects appear good value.

Perhaps a lot of the costs that are incurred in the auto industry that don't apply to the airline industry are vast (e.g. tooling up multiple factories for huge volume automation).
