Square tyres! I guess the result of an puncture, that allowed the tyre to deflate in the wheelwell during flight at altitude (low pressure) and then the tyre collapsed as the plane descended? (the puncture could have "sealed" when pressurised from the outside in, rather than inside out?)

Pretty much what I thought, described well! As soon as I heard they had a tyre pressure alarm on take off and decided to continue to London, the inside of the tyre was going to be at low pressure through the 'hole' and deformed the tyre - powerful stuff air!

Mrs Buzz is an engineer for BA and showed me a pic she took of this wheel when it came in, we came to the same conclusion. High pressure tyre at height deflates over the course of a 12 hour odd flight and equalisied to the low pressure there. Then the decent would be relatively quick and not be enough time for it to equalise, leaving it at low pressure resulting in its collapse.
