Around 09:00 today (3 August). It was certainly a large piston engine, but I didn't really hear the characteristic Merlin "growl" - maybe because I was indoors. I only caught a fleeting glimpse of it through the glass in the conservatory roof, but the silhouette looked right. It also seemed to be travelling quite a bit faster that the usual light aircraft we see overhead.

Could it have been a Mustang? if so, where might it have been going? A quick google hasn't shown up any air shows anywhere near here.

If it was quiet and fast, maybe a Tucano?

Thinking a bit more about what I saw (glimpsed) and heard, you're probably right. Propeller noise, but no piston-engine "growl", and the silhouettes are similar at a brief glance.

Not arguing with what's been said, but I 'saw' a Mustang on one of the radar sites Thursday/Friday last week around South Wales, so not beyond the realms of possibility perhaps?

There is a Heritage Show in Lincolnshire this weekend, could be something to do with that?
