Joe Sutter has died aged 95

From his Wikiepdeia entry - Joseph F. "Joe" Sutter (March 21, 1921 – August 30, 2016) was an American engineer for the Boeing Airplane Company and manager of the design team for the Boeing 747 under Malcolm T. Stamper, the head of the 747 project.[3] Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine has described Sutter as the "father of the 747"

Indeed,

What a life though, and he got to see the 747 from idea to being a familiar sight all over the world, and checked out before they start dissapearing from schedules too much.

I have a massive fondness for the 747, I also entered service in 1970.

The book to read for Sutter and the 747 (IMO) is Wide Body, by Clive Irving. Wonderful read and I thought a good management textbook into the bargain.

Read that book a few years ago and it is indeed an excellent history of the emergence of the 747.
