Avro Lancaster?

Heard an almighty noise a couple of minutes ago and went outside and saw what I think was a Lancaster pass overhead Locks Heath heading north. Fantastic sight and sound. Anyone any idea what it's doing around these parts?

On its way back from Channel Islands, it was at Jersey and Guernsey Airshows today.
Might be going into Bournemouth for overnight stop instead of going back to Connigsby, as its due to display at Goodwood tomorrow and Sat.

Ah right thanks hopefully see it again over the weekend then. Did a quick google, I wasn't aware that there was only 1 left flying in the UK.

Been that way for decades. PA474 has been flying as a monument to Bomber Command since 1973.

The only other airworthy example is in Canada.

NX611 (Just Jane) is kept in running order and may, some day, return to the air.

PA474 was due to display at Farnborough this year but unfortunately, a leaking fuel tank kept her grounded until only a few weeks ago.

Then I should count myself lucky that I got to see her today, very low, very slow and very loud.

Can you imagine seeing dozens of them in formation flying south to ruin Hitlers night, must have been something else.

This is an authentic recording from 1942. You are hearing Lancasters and Wellingtons.

The sound engineer was intending to record the birds, but the bombers are more historically significant.

It takes a while for the audio to build up.

They normally fly out of Southampton for the revival and the fighters will base at Goodwood so you should see it again over the next 3 days.

Driving east near Southend Airport a few years ago I happened to glance right and saw a Lancaster heading straight for me at about 200'. A worthy double take!
