China 70 years late to the 4 engine flying boat party?
Discussion
Chinese flying boat unveiled Japan aside everyone's been really over the whole 4 engine flying boat thing since about 1945, even the russians aren't that keen any more. Barking.

Martin Mars arguably bigger, as were the Blohm & Voss BV 222 and BV 238.
So was the Convair Tradewind. Martin Mars arguably bigger, as were the Blohm & Voss BV 222 and BV 238.
I think they probably mean the largest amphibious aircraft.

Seems reasonable to me - an aeroplane that doesn't need runways. The original big flying boats were made obsolete by fast long range jets, but this is not for long range or speed.
China's current regional ambitions involve building military bases all over the South China Sea on tiny coral atolls. They've been building airports on the bigger ones, but I can imagine that having a plane that can move tonnes of cargo or a couple of hundred troops quickly and easily between some of the smaller bases without the huge engineering challenge of building a runway is going to be really handy. dr_gn said:

It is the Guardian. Be thankful they didn't describe it as a jumbo jet.Martin Mars arguably bigger, as were the Blohm & Voss BV 222 and BV 238.

Sensible route to take by the Chinese.
Fire fighting operators around the globe could be interested as well.

I think most of you are being deliberately perverse to allow you to recall large types that have been built in the past.Which other currently (or soon to be, like this Chinese one) available amphibious aircraft can you list?
Are any of them bigger than this Chinese one?
