The Panama canal was a major bottleneck and required comparatively tiny ships - now they can use much bigger ones there's no real place for small ships like these, especially ones that aren't "geared" (equipped with cranes) so that they can work in less developed countries.

A Panamax vessel, as it was until the enlarged canal was recently opened, is a large ship and is not considered "tiny", and you will find that container vessels of this size are not geared. Many will be going for scrap as this size of vessel is now effectively obsolete, coupled with overcapacity in the sector driving charter rates into the floor.
